I will be the first to admit; I am not a fan of post mix tape Nicki Minaj, but with good reason, IE her latest album, Roman Reloaded.
The album seems as though it is broken up into four sections: The first is what would be considered as “bangers” but all that ended up banging was my head from listening to unclever metaphor’s and punch lines that an elementary school student could think up. The tracks “I am your leader” and “Champion” are the only two that actually seem as though she cared about what she said throughout the verses. Possibly because they are both tracks with features from big names like; Rick Ross, Drizzy, Jeezy, Nasty Nas and even Cam’ Ron. That’s just me speculating though.
The second section of the album has a few of the typical love/sex type of songs. The track “Right by my side” features Chris Brown and is one that I can see being a single and being billboard friendly.
The third is where I got all thrown off. It sounds as though someone made a wrong turn at the techno club down at the jersey shore. “Starships” (her current single) sounds a lot like super bass with a techno breakdown. I’m convinced that the tracks “Whip it” and “Pound the alarm” sound a lot better when you’ve had so much to drink that everything sounds the same, but sober, it just perpetuated my headache.
The last section of the album was full of songs that sounded vaguely familiar to “Fly” off of Pink Friday with that cross over pop feel to them that all of the pre pubescent Barbie’s love. Both “Marilyn Monroe” and “Fire Burns” sound like could be played on any pop station and would get a nice response.
All in all, after listening to the album I was more confused than ever and needed an Advil. Roman should have reconsidered rather than reloaded.
