Coming off of the well received mixtape E.p.i.c (every play is crucial), Grand Hustle artist, B.O.B has released his 2nd studio album “Strange Clouds”. The album opens with the track “Bombs Away” which features none other than Morgan Freeman doing what he does best, narrating. The track itself is one of substance and sets the tone for the rest of the album.
While the sound of the album is reminiscent of a ping pong game between pop and crunk, what is consistent is that while B.O.B’s voice is annoying as all hell he can actually rap. With features from names like Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Little Wayne and TI among others, he still manages to hold his own and not lose himself.
I found myself liking songs on both the pop end as well as the hip hop end of the spectrum. Songs like “So hard to breath”, and “Chandelier” could easily transition from the album to mainstream radio. On the other hand, tracks like “Play for keeps” and “Out of my mind” featuring Nicki Minaj could be played on urban stations anywhere.
All in all, “Strange Clouds” is an improvement from his debut. It isn’t something that I’d listen to on a consistent basis or even from cover to cover but there are a few tracks that would get put on a playlist. Don’t take my word for it though, check it out for yourself.
